New Rogue Velo Juniors!

Please join me in welcoming our two newest Rogue Velo Juniors – Sean Hughes and Samantha McKinnon.  Great kids that love to ride bikes.

First up is Sean Hughes. He is 11 years old and just completed his first year of racing.  He raced both road and cyclocross in 2014.  His proudest moment happened at Mt Trashmore race where Sean finished 5th in the 10-14 field.  He also placed 3rd in the 11-12 VA State Cyclocross Championship field!!!

Sean’s goal for next season is to consistently finish in the top 5.  The way he improved this season, you can bet he will be up on that podium in the Rogue Velo colors!!!

Next up is Samantha McKinnon who will be a big addition to our woman’s team.  You may have seen Sam flying around the course in the Cat 4/5 and Cat 3/4 races, and if you didn’t see her on the course then you probably saw her on the podium as she is a regular there.

Sam has been racing triathlons since she was 6 years old and her first bike race was the Shenandoah Time Trial at 11.  Her best bike experience so far was the VA Crit State Championships where she was the only female to hang onto the lead pack of boys.  Sam says that race taught her a lot about race tactics, position in the pack, chasing down a break away and her first attempt at breaking away with Casey Fulton..

Sam’s goals for next year are to place well at Road Nationals and CX Nationals as well as upgrading to CAT 3 in CX.

Welcome to the team Sean and Samantha. We are excited to have you.

We are back! The time is here…

Tis the night before Jamestown
when all through the state
Not a cross racer is sleeping
Just awaiting the date

The tires are nestled…
all snug on their wheels
While Rogue Velo team mates
search East Coast for deals

The tubulars are glued
and topped off with Stans
while we search for all races
throughout East Coast lands

The bikes are hung
On the bike racks with care
And each tire is pumped
with an exact pressure of air

We’ve replaced all our cables
and a new shiny chain
In preps for the mud
The sand and the rain

So here’s to our friendship
Share a beer and a smile
Caution tape is back
And will remain for a while!

And yes…. I am addicted…..

Rogue Velo Racing Announces New Partnership

Well, unless you’ve been under an extremely large rock, in a cave, on another planet, you know that Rogue Velo Racing has just recently gone through some changes.  Biggest of all, is our new partnership with East Coast Bicycles of Norfolk, VA (Nawfick if Jen is telling it).  That said, we are super excited to have our good friend Mike Shipp and crew on board and are looking forward to some good fun together.  For example, we had our first CX practice of the season last night, and Mike rolls up on a Trek fatbike (and killed it around the CX course in case you missed it).  Yeah, he’s definitely one of us.

So with East Coast Bicycles comes the Goliath of cycling – Trek and their partner brand Bontrager.  I’ll admit – I was not all that familiar with the Trek line prior to this move, but as I did my research I realized that Trek is what they always have been: the leader in cycling design and performance.  With our partnership comes an amazing deal offered to us by Trek which they call “The Trek Great Athlete Program”.  Fantastic discounts on bikes and gear and an opportunity for us to really support a brand that cares about the future of this sport – while they gladly support us.  Win/win I’d say.  So when you’re ready to pull the trigger on your next CX rig, or are now in the position to finally throw a leg over a hot new Madone road bike, make sure you stop in and see Mike and crew at East Coast Bicycles.  We already have a bunch of great ideas for things coming in the near future – stay tuned!

Finally, I would encourage each and every one of you to drop a line or stop in and say thanks to Walt and Robert at Fat Frogs for their tremendous support over the last few years.  Without them, Rogue Velo Racing would have really struggled to get up and running.  Best of luck now and in the future to Walt and his crew.  Always class acts, and excellent ambassadors for cycling in our community.

Anyway, see you guys on the road and most definitely in the gravel!

Jerry Hadley takes 1st in Tour of Hampton Roads Cat 3

RVR had a great showing at the 2014 Tour of Hampton Roads, with Jerry Hadley taking 1st place in the Cat 3 Omnium. Jerry scored 7th in the TT, 2nd in the Crit, and 4th in the Road Race to round out a stellar weekend. Full results are posted here.

Other notable great finishes for the weekend include:

  • Jen Pope, 2nd in the Women’s 1/2/3 road race.
  • Brad Gresham, 1st in the Cat 4 crit and 2nd in the road race. Brad was definitely in contention for winning the omnium, but didn’t sign up for it 🙁 – although according to the results, he still placed third, even though he didn’t sign up. Yes, Brad is that strong!

Since Tom is too modest to write about it, he finished 3rd in the Cat 4 Road Race as the Tour of Hampton Roads.

Also, our own Sarah Kozak took the Bronze in the in the Cat 4 Crit State Champs at the Tour of Hampton Roads!
